Loaves & Fishes Partnership Evolves

Loaves and Fishes (L&F) has been serving hot meals to those in need throughout seven counties in Minnesota since 1982. St. Stephen’s has served with L&F for many years and hope to continue to do so for many more.

As with all good partnership, ours is evolving with Loaves & Fishes.

New Serving Site Location

After years of serving at an L& F site in Minneapolis, we began serving meals to hungry neighbors at Woodlake Lutheran in Richfield.  The Woodlake Lutheran site comes with several benefits that make service a snap. The site provides a professional chef and all the food.  When parishioners arrive, a menu is already planned and the food is set out.  We just roll up our sleeves and get to work serving in the kitchen or dining room.

New Coordinators

Mike and Annie Listiak recently agreed to serve as our new parish coordinators and they led their first dinner earlier this year.

With their three children assisting, Mike and Annie have already found the new service site to be a great one families with kids of all ages, even those with young children.

Describing their family’s service experience, Annie remarked, “Loaves and Fishes has provided a wonderful opportunity for our family to serve together.  Our kids witness first-hand that hunger is real for many people in our community and that there is something we can do to help.  The time commitment is minimal, but the impact is significant for those seeking services as well as those volunteering.  We had three generations come together to help serve and clean up for an evening; what a meaningful way to spend time together as a family.”

Some of our new volunteers, little hands as young as seven, found the experience of wiping down tables, serving rolls and drinks, and drying dishes out of the hot dishwasher a fun adventure.

Javi and Mary Martin, both 7 years old, are now expert dish dryers.

One of our youngest volunteers, Javi, loved it, excitingly describing how, “feeding people feels good!  Also, it’s like God touches you; you actually get to know Him somehow by serving.”

We’d love to welcome your family into service with this ministry. As we all start to fill up our fall calendars, we hope you will make room for serving together as a family.

In the coming weeks, we will share more stories and opportunities to reach beyond our walls. Look for sign-up details soon!
