St. Stephen’s has been mentoring families at risk for homelessness for almost 20 years. In an effort to expand mentoring with our current partner, Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative, we recently began a partnership with Trinity Lutheran Church in supporting mentoring efforts as a part of Beacon’s Families Moving Forward Keys to Success Program.
Families Moving Forward’s housing efforts understand that the most efficient way to reduce the length of stay in shelter is to offer subsidies to help program participants afford rent in housing they choose. Each family presents barriers to housing stability on a continuum from very few, temporary obstacles to multiple, permanent barriers.
The Keys to Success program is designed for families with minimal, temporary barriers to housing and some income. The program provides case management, a volunteer mentor and a shallow rental subsidy for up to one year in a market rate apartment the family chooses. The goal of the program is to help families to quickly increase their income and overcome any other barriers to maintaining stable housing.
In addition to funding, St. Stephen’s has 3 parishioners who sit on a committee to support our mentor. We are very excited about this new partnership! Look for announcements on how you can support the Keys to Success program mentoring efforts in the future.
