In January 2022, a new live streaming system with multiple cameras was installed in the Nave, replacing the previous iPad streaming setup. The initial phase of enhancing our live stream experience centered on improving the video quality, as the team recognized difficulties in enhancing our sound. To provide online worshipers with a similar experience to being in our pews, more time would be needed to address sound challenges.
Since that time, the online community at St. Stephen’s Church has grown to include an average of 33 households participating in the 10:15 worship service every week. Considering that many of these households include multiple individuals, this translates to approximately 45-50 additional parishioners filling our pews on Sundays. And while these parishioners have been served well by the video improvements, sound issues persist despite the dedicated efforts of our sound engineers each week.
Jimmy Barnett, Director of Live Stream and Sound engineering, explains, “Our current setup presents some significant challenges. We are missing certain specialized microphones and optimal microphone placement in all the necessary areas. There’s also complexity when trying to use the same sound controls equipment for both in-person and online services.”
The requirements for in-person sound and online sound are distinct. Currently, engineers are sharing the sound system, resulting in a “meet in the middle “compromise that somewhat restricts the quality for both. But, that’s about to change.
Thanks to a generous donation and the collective efforts of our sound engineering team and sound consultants, enhancements in sound quality for both live streaming and in-person worship is underway!
New ambient microphones have recently been installed to capture the singing and responses of the congregation. In addition, specialized microphones, including a piano microphone, have been positioned in the chancel to create a stereo sound effect that showcases our exceptional choral and instrumental music. Lastly, a new digital soundboard is being introduced to enable independent control of live stream and in-person sound, catering to the specific needs of both congregations.
Our engineers are currently testing and familiarizing themselves with the new soundboard, determining the optimal sound settings for our unique space. Expect to experience these enhancements firsthand soon.
