The Beguines: Women of Faith & Action
The Christian legacy of the Beguines is a rich, compelling, and mostly unknown story. Neither nuns nor members of a formal religious order, the Beguines were laywomen who tended to the poor and sick. They also ran businesses, led some of the first co-ed schools, and wrote some of our earliest examples of vernacular literature.
The Beguines flourished during the Middle Ages, particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands, where examples of their communal housing still stand today. Join Rachel Gabriel Dana for a dynamic presentation on the early Beguines and a conversation about how their movement—and their distinctive way of living out faith in community—continues to inspire today.
Women of all ages are welcome! We’ll begin the morning, as always, by sharing a potluck breakfast, followed by our program and conversation. Please RSVP and sign up to bring something to share if you’re able. Whether you join us every month or this will be your first Women’s Gathering, we’d love to have you at the table.
