An Invitation to Agrarian Ministry

Good Courage Farm (GCF) is a nonprofit agrarian ministry founded in 2019. Connected to the Episcopal Church in Minnesota (ECMN), the farm is located in Hutchinson, MN and its a place where neighbors of all faiths gather to grow food for food ministries, including our outreach partners at First Nations Kitchen and Casa Maria.

St. Stephen’s became involved with GCF in 2023 when parishioners Catherine Beringer and Patrice McFarlane formed a team to join their new Vineyard Stewards ministry. This “vinistry” is a seasons-long faith-based relationship with God’s creation, otherpeople, and a row of cold-hardy grapevines. Our parish’s connection to the farm has grown to also include grant writing assistance, and monetary support from our Outreach Committee.

“We learned about the GCF at the ECMN convention,” remembers Patrice. Later, the Beringers and McFarlanes made a visit together to the farm. “I loved how welcoming everyone was. They created an atmosphere where I felt connected to the earth and my faith,” recalls Catherine.

A team of twelve stewards from our parish served throughout the 2023 growing season. There was a lot to learn. The work was hard, but the connection to the earth and the holistic approach of GCF incorporating learning, formation, and worship with the labor, was incredibly rewarding.

“Each visit came with an instant community that felt authentic and good for the soul. You never had to worry whether or not you’d feel like you belong,” shared Catherine. “Plus, there’s fresh-baked homemade treats when you arrive!”

Patrice added, “While the drive is considerable and the work is physical, the experience – including the people, place and purpose – was transformative. Everyone’s physical abilities were respected and accommodated. There is something for everyone to contribute to GCF.”

2024 brings a new growing season and more ways for serve in the GCF ministry. Orchard Stewards have been introduced to help with the 170 varieties of organic fruit being grown. The farm uses regenerative methods, that make take the ideal of restoring the earth from an idea to reality.

Volunteers may sign up as individuals or as a part of a group and may choose between the Orchard or Vineyard programs, making serving more flexible. A great way to check out GCF before volunteering is to attend one of their Prayer & Pie or Eucharist events. Learn more by visiting https://www.goodcourage.farm/.
